The worldwide film community has been challenged on gender discrimination, studies report on the imbalanced statistics behind the camera, public agencies are launching diversity initiatives and the conversation is reaching a fever pitch in the media. Drawing on their experiences, established female directors from Canada discuss how they took charge of their careers and asserted themselves strategically to build a name for themselves in the industry and successful careers at home and abroad. The panel marks the 5th annual Birks Diamond Tribute to the Year’s Women in Film, in partnership with Telefilm Canada.

Helen du Toit

Helen du Toit

For over two decades, Helen Du Toit had a hybrid career as an independent film producer and international film curator that kept her on the move. She worked at the Toronto, Edinburgh, Seattle, Vancouver and Palm Springs international film festivals. In between festivals she developed and sometimes produced films. The most fun and biggest learning curve she’s had on a film was co-producing (and sound recording) the U.S. portion of Mark Cousins’ 15-hour feature documentary The Story of Film: An Odyssey. In December of 2016, Helen was asked to head up CBC’s new Breaking Barriers Film Fund, a program established to support the work of under-represented filmmakers, i.e., women, Aboriginals, disabled persons and members of a visible minority.
